How To Become A Motivated Monster Through Discomfort
This is a HUGE problem amongst guys, which seems to be gradually getting worse. I’ve heard guys saying things like they don’t have the motivation to:
- Smash their gym sessions
- Eat clean food
- Avoid junk
- Attack their goals with aggression
- Meet new people
- Take on new challenges
And this is pretty much the biggest ruiner of men. If you don’t overcome challenges, obstacles and hit goals, you’re automatically in decline. This is horrendous for your overall happiness and well-being, never mind your fitness and your looks.
Whilst I don’t necessarily agree with the “If you’re not grinding 24/7 then you’re Not A Real Man™” crew, (we need to have some fun), I do think that we need to have goals, energy and a lack of lethargy. Being too comfortable tends to be a by-product of the aforementioned issues.
It’s a huge problem that has various potential solutions. Let me dive into them today.
Discomfort & Motivation
Several years ago, I was walking round at about 17% body fat. Whilst I wasn’t fat by any means, I equally wasn’t happy with the way I looked. I had a chubby face, somehwat of a belly (especially for my age), and I knew I was capable of so much more.
There was this nagging itch at the back of my mind always reminding me that I wasn’t fulfilling my potential. It irritated the hell out of me, and I just wanted to lose fat and get ripped.
Why were other guys ripped and I wasn’t?
Why wasn’t I born with a longer, naturally lean-looking face? Or torso, for that matter.
These problems bugged the hell out of me at the time. But I certainly didn’t channel this annoyance into the external world. I certainly didn’t start hating other guys who were born better-looking. I certainly didn’t start hating my brother, for example.
I’ve seen some really nasty ways people respond to not being successful with fitness. They want everyone else to change instead of changing themselves, and demand that they do so. Otherwise they’re “selfish” or “evil”. They then continue to live a shortened life of bitterness and resentment. Not good.
No, I decided that enough was enough, and that it was time for me to change.
Become A Motivation Monster
You have a choice to make. Choice number one is this:
Cross your arms and frown and complain about how the rest of the world is so unfair and the world needs to change.
Do you think this is a good choice? Do you think the rest of the world is really going to change for you? Really? Somehow I think that would be foolish to expect.
Or, you have the slightly more reasonable (but far more difficult) approach of choice number two:
Put in the work to improve yourself. See what makes you happy. See what gets you the results you want in real life. Then put in the damn work until you get exactly what you want. Simple logic. But hard work. It will make you happier in the long-term though.
Here’s 6 quick tips to boost your motivation:
- Reconnect with your source of discomfort – remind yourself of this daily.
- Review your goals, mission and vision – remind yourself daily.
- Get 8 hours of sleep every night.
- Get laid frequently.
- Lift weights and/or do cardio at least every 48 hours.
- If all of the above fails, get blood tests done.
Armed with the above six, you will solve your motivation problem one way or another. I almost never feel unmotivated, and it’s because I know I need at least a little discomfort in my life. I remind myself of my previous states of discomfort, my goals and my mission, and I get to work.
